Unto Margaret MacDuibhshithe, Silver Buccle Herald and the AEthelmearc College of Heralds, greetings from the Heraldic Flying Circus and Moving Company. Our next heraldry breakfast is scheduled for Sunday May 16th, 10 A.M. Herewith our comments on ILoI #A34, dated March 11, A.S. XXXIII, C.E. 1999. 01) AEthelmearc, Kingdom of -- (order name) The Order of the Caltrop (badge:"Fieldless, a caltrop per pale argent and sable.") The sides of the caltrop should come in to the center a little bit further. See PicDic #83 for a better rendition. Clear of: Marie Solange Chantal de Sainte GeneviΦve|9512O|B| "(Fieldless) A caltrap argent ermined azure." (1 CD for fieldless, 1 CVD for tincture) 02) AEthelmearc, Kingdom of -- (order name) The Order of the Scarlet Guard (badge: "Fieldless, an archer's tassle per pale gules and argent.") What's the difference between an archer's tassle and a tassle? This is a tassle. 03) Almeric Wolfgang von Ristau -- (name) Almeric -- Withycombe pg.17 "Almeric [in English] is a modern back-formation from Almericus, a latinization of the German by-form Almeric(h)" (device: "Argent, on a bend raguly sable between two wolves rampant purpure collared and chained with a broken chain each maintaining a sword gules, four paw prints argent.") The wolves are rather small. 04) Brandric of Rhydderich Hael -- (name) The name was registered June 1991. 05) Caitlin Donegal-- (name) Caitlin -- O'Corrain & Maguire, p45 (under Caiterina) Donegal -- Encyc. Brit. [1959, v7, p527] (under Donegal) "This district was formed into the county of Donegal in 1585, in the reign of Elizabeth I, by the lord deputy Sir John Perrot." (device: "Purpure, two celtic seahorses combattant, tails crossed, a bordure _ENGRAILED_ argent.") 06) Calum Hugh Munro -- (name) Calum -- Black p127 (under Callum) "G. Calum for earlier Cillecalum" Hugh -- Black p369 "An early Teutonic personal name, from OHG, hugu "huge". Munro -- Black p619 dates this spelling to 1463. 07) Clement of Morocco -- (name) The name was registered March 1997. 08) Danielle de l'eau froide -- (name) The name literally translates as "of the cold water." Dauzat lists Froidefond (Coldspring) p271, Froideval (Coldvalley) p271, and Leau (Waters) p376 as surnames. (device: "Sable, a cross gyronny argent and vert.") Clear of: Athalwolf Tyrell|9209X|D| "Sable, a cross gyronny gules and argent between four reremice argent." (1 CVD for tincture, 1 CVD for bats) 10) Egill the Dane -- (name) The name was registered November 1992. 11) Elaine Flamme -- (name) The name was registered August 1995. (device: "Azure, three open books, a bordure _INVECTED_ argent.") The device needs to be re-drawn. The bordure is definitely invected and appears to be divided per pall. 12) Isabel Kelsey de Cameron -- (name) The name was registered November 1998. (device: "Per pale argent and gules, two unicorns combattant, a bordure counterchanged.") Clear of: Katherine of An Tir |9108N|D| "Per pale azure and vert two unicorns combattant within a bordure argent." (1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for unicorn tincture, 1 CVD for bordure tincture) 13) Magnus Jager -- (device: "Or, a ram's head cabossed sable enflamed proper.") Still in conflict with: Riordan Robert MacGregor|9212C|D| "Quarterly purpure and argent, a ram's head caboshed sable armed Or." (1 CVD for field, 0 CVD for flames, 0 CVD for horns tincture) 15) Maurya Etain Sableswan -- (name) The name was registered November 1980. (badge: "Argent, a cross of ermined spots, a bordure sable." The cross is not conjoined. It is simply a cross of ermine spots. 16) Muireadhach MacBheathain -- (name) The name was registered September 1997. (device: "Per chevron ermine and vert, in base a lion's head cabossed or.") Clear of: Rolland Forrester|9410T|D| "Per chevron sable and gules, two fleurs-de-lys and a lion's head cabossed Or." (1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for fleur-de-lys) 17) Padraig O'Branduibh -- (device: "Sable simple.") If he ever wins crown, coronation is going to look like a funeral. :-) Parker, p509, "Sable simple." was the arms of Gourney of Norfolk, Dombale, Glegg, & Lorraine. It is period style. As further justification for registering a single tincture, the SCA protects Libya "Vert." and Britanny "Ermine". However, the subject of single tincture registration recently came up on the heralds e-mail discussion group. Apparently, when the submission "Gules, ermined Or." was at Laurel several years ago, it was returned with the comment, "We don't register single tinctures." We haven't yet found the citation. Master Bruce Draconarius was also mentioned in the discussions as having ruled against single tinctures. 18) Rose verch Catrin -- (device: "Gules, a bend wavy between two roses argent, barbed and seeded proper.") The bend wavy could be drawn better. The bend should drift from side to side, not bulge and narrow. 19) - 24) Saint Swithin's Bog, Barony of -- (order name) The Order of Saint Swithin Encyc. Brit. [1959, v21, p675 (under Swithun (or Swithin))] says "... bishop of Winchester ... His death is entered in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle under the year 861." Webster's Second lists the following orders named for Saints: Order of Saint Benedict, Portugal, founded 1162 Order of Saint James of the Sword, Spain, founded 1170 Order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus, Italy, founded 1434 Order of Saint Andrew, Russia, founded 1698 We found no historical Order of Saint Swithin listed, so it is probably free of historical conflict. (badge: "Purpure, a stalk of three cattails slipped and leaved or.") (badge: "Gules, a stalk of three cattails slipped and leaved or.") (badge: "Azure, a stalk of three cattails slipped and leaved or.") (badge: "Sable, a stalk of three cattails slipped and leaved, a bordure or.") Clear of: Llywelyn Gruffydd of Elfsea|9409X|D| "Vert, three cattails slipped and leaved conjoined at the base argent." (1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for tincture) Sean of Bergental|9404E|B| "(Fieldless) A tuft of three cattails slipped and leaved argent." (1 CVD for field, 1 CVD for tincture) (badge: "Sable, an armored sinister fist argent emerging from a ford proper.") This is their arms minus the laurel wreath. 25) Trinity Munro -- (name) Trinity -- Is there any documentation included, or is it simply asserted that this was a mediaeval woman's name? Withycombe, p284, describes Unity as "an example of the use of abstract nouns denoting moral qualities which came into fashion in the 17th C." In the absence of documentation, we'd have to say this is yet another example (although admittedly emphasis on trinity was more prevalent in the middle ages, while emphasis on unity was more popular during the reformation). Munro -- Black p619 dates this spelling to 1463. 26) Ulrich von Wulfson -- (name) "von" means "of" not "the".
